To use your PS2 in full VGA glory you will need a compatible VGA monitor and an external VGA adapter (either an original Blaze adapter or an homebrew one). Before enabling VGA mode in the configuration screen, test the adapter and the monitor with the original vga software to make sure they are working properly. I have HDLoader and it's fantastic. My understanding is HDAdvance is basically exactly the same. I've got an old 60GB in my PS2 that I had lying around, and I know the first release of HDLoader was limited to 120GB drives, but that may have changed with the later releases.

You'll also need the network adapter, if you don't already have one. You only need a modchip if you want to rip DVD-R and CD-R games to the HDD. If you're ripping legit games you can do it with a stock unit. If you hook the HDD into your PC, there is an application that lets you transfer game images directly to the drive, but I haven't tried it and I can't remember what it's called. HDLoader is fine. Something to note is that a lot of work has been done to improve its functionality. The stock, retail disc works fine but there are updates for it that can be done by using the memory card exploit to load the updated software of the memory card.

Anyway, WinHIIP is a great program that lets you install games if you connect your PS2 HDD to your PC. You can install either off the discs or from.iso files. This matters, cause the PS2 DVD drive is only 1x, maxxing out at 1.5MB/sec but never actually getting that fast. So basically you get the games on the PS2 HDD however you like, and then launch them from a menu. Once you get that running, you can download a.iso of a PS2 FTP server and connect to it through your network to install updated HDLoader files, move saves around, install other homebrew apps, etc.

You need it to transfer Dual Layer games, too. But you also need.

Well, go to thread. (Only for multi-layer games, though.) One last thing, no Western Digital hard drives. They are physically incompatible with the network adaptor.

You can mangle your adaptor but that'll void your warranty, whereas simply stuffing a HDD in there isn't really traceable. (I love talking about this stuff) The memcard exploit is pretty simple. The hard part is getting access to the memcard. HDLoader makes this pretty easy.

There's a homebrewed FTP server.iso you can download (dont remember the name, it's only like a meg, I'll see if I can host it later today) to make this work. Anyway, you get a PS1 disc, and. It's been a long time, I'm forgetting a step here. You use the Disc ID off that disc, modifying the default PS2 boot data to launch whatever app you like. The above-linked PSX Forums has most of the files you'll need except for the base HDloader executable. Also has a lot of data bout how this works.

Originally posted by SilverBlade: Thanx for your replies, much appreciated. However, the memory card exploit, would anybody care to indepth explain the whole thing? I've heard rumblings of people actually getting hdloader to run from the memorycard. Is that true? Other places tell me that you need a two discs, a cd for cd based hd games, and vice versa for DVD??

It's true, I'm doing it. You need the HDloader software and a PS1 game for it to work. I can provide an in-depth guide for running software (including HDloader) off the memory card a little later today, and most of the software if you can't find it on the sites already linked. I use HDLoader all the time, and have been pretty happy with it. Getting Champions of Norrath working on it was a pain in the arse, but man did it ever improve the game when I got it working. Now if I can upload and download saves that's gonna rock, cause I am constantly running out of save space and I hate deleting old saves.

Being able to archive to the pc sounds great. Finally found the old guide I used to get the FTP server loaded on my PS2 The point is to get the memcard exploit set up. It's choppy and I dunno if the links still work, but give it a look. You'll probably actually want to install keylauncher as the default boot software once you get the FTP working off the hard drive. It's a menu program that lets you set gamepad buttons to launch different ELFs off the memory card.

I'll summarize the steps required, they are explained more fully in that thread, there's a major rewrite of the steps a couple pages in: Create a modified Title.db from a PSX game Create a PS2-compatible ISO with the FTP software Install ISO on HDD via WinHIIP Rename what ever ELF (that's the PS2 equivalent of a EXE file) you're booting to BOOT.ELF Copy modified Title.db and BOOT.ELF to memory card Boot PS2 with PS1 game, enjoy memory card exploit. Heh, I just discovered this earlier today, so bear with me. First, you MUST use a burned CD to use SNES-Station. At least I think so.

There is no configuration in it to make it read from a hard drive partition that I can understand. Making other stuff run off the HD, well, look here at what I found. From there you want ToolsDMS-HDD-FORMAT-11.ZIP, that's the program you can use to create, rename and rezise partitions. (Registration required to download) LaunchELF can be used to copy stuff from the MC or USB to the hard drive, into a partition you have created with DMS HDD tool.

It also works a lot like KeyLauncher, but it makes more sense and has more features. I have it as my default BOOT.ELF. So with these two things you can launch ELFs from your hard drive instead of cluttering up your memcard with a bunch of crap.

LaunchELF also makes it easy to copy saves to the HDD without the hastle of FTPing. Originally posted by Crimson Harvest: Heh, I just discovered this earlier today, so bear with me. First, you MUST use a burned CD to use SNES-Station.

Just saw somebody mentioned the DMS tool in regards to the ftp command SITE MNT, seems that's the only tool that can make the different partitions. LaunchELF looks great, thanks for the links and info, will get on this as soon as I beat Chrono Trigger =). So I've been thinking of picking up the exclusives on that platform. I'm not quite sure if I should go with the old or the slim version though. As I've understood it's possible to get a HDD to work on slim as well. How hard is it to mod the PS2(slim or old)?

I did the modding on my Xbox myself, with soldering and all that. Though I have to say that I'm considering to get a premodded PS2 or just not bother with the modding. It'd really only be for imports, and I'm not sure if I'll bother importing for the PS2.
